The camera uses a new 12.2MP Exmor R image sensor. It is a back-illuminated CMOS type sensor. The Bionz XR processor is busy with data processing. The manufacturer notes a wide range of light sensitivity – ISO 80-102400, expandable to ISO 40-409600; improved image quality compared to the previous model and additional noise reduction (by about 1 EV) at medium and high ISO values.

The camera is equipped with a stabilization system for five degrees of freedom. The hybrid autofocus system has 759 points that cover 92% of the frame. The manufacturer notes the improved operation of the function of detecting eyes in the frame and tracking them.

The advantages of the camera include shooting video with 4K resolution and frame rates up to 120 fps at 10-bit representation and 4: 2: 2 downsampling with the possibility of encoding in H.264 or H.265. Also worth mentioning is the support for S-Log2 / 3 and HLG profiles. The dynamic range of motion picture recording exceeds 15 EV. For the first time, the Alpha series cameras can output 4K 60p 16-bit RAW video to an external recorder. The new cooling system and two memory card slots let you shoot 4K video at 60 fps (until the battery runs out).

Continuous photography is possible at speeds up to 10 fps, in the length of the burst with AF tracking and metering exceeds 1000 frames in RAW format.
