Sony leads the market for image sensors for smartphone cameras
Research by Strategy Analytics shows that the global market for image sensors for smartphone cameras grew last year, despite declining shipments of cellular devices overall.
The industry is estimated to have a monetary value of approximately $ 15.0 billion in 2020, a 13% increase over the previous year when suppliers of image sensors for mobile cameras generated approximately $ 13.3 billion.
The observed picture, as analysts say, is explained by the fact that smartphone developers are increasingly opting for better, and therefore more expensive, sensors. Another reason for the growth is the use of multi-module cameras in devices of all price segments.
According to the results of 2020, the Sony Corporation became the market leader with a share of 46% in monetary terms. Samsung LSI is in second place with 29%, and OmniVision Technologies closes the top three with 10%. Thus, together, these three suppliers control about 85% of the industry (in money).
It is also noted that Sony’s position is gradually weakening under pressure from competitors. Experts believe that this trend will continue this year.
