Sony saved the PlayStation 5 from the loud rotation of the disc in the optical drive
Since the launch of the PlayStation 5 in November 2020, users have regularly reported an issue that caused the game disc inside the console to rotate periodically and quite loudly. Luckily, it looks like Sony Interactive Entertainment has solved it in the latest system update.
Previously, some users complained that the console disk spins every hour, while others reported that it happened every 15-20 minutes. Although it was assumed that spinning might be part of the authentication process, the problem was observed even when the inserted disc was not in use.
On April 14, Sony released the first major update to the PlayStation 5 system. It added many new features, including the ability to store PS5 games on external USB drives. According to several console users, one of the undeclared features of the update is a disk rotation bug fix.
Users on gaming forums report that the PlayStation 5 is now spinning the disc not only much quieter but possibly less often.
“I turned on my PS5 after the update and launched Ghost of Tsushima with the disc [with another game Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales] in the drive. I heard it only spin during the initial console startup and then nothing for more than an hour. I was working, so I could skip it if the spin were really quiet, but if it were as loud as it was before the patch, I would definitely hear it […], ”wrote one user.
