Telegram for Android has video calls

The Telegram platform will be 7 years old on September 6, 2020. On this occasion, the service of the IT revolutionary Pavel Durov announced the launch of an open alpha test of the video calling function in the Telegram app for Android. The company previously conducted closed testing of the same feature on iOS devices.

To use the video calling function on Android devices, you need to update the Telegram application in the Play Store to the latest version (7.0), open it, and then click the button with the camera icon in the user profile. The function allows you to switch between a voice call and a video call right during a call, as well as correspond in chats without ending the call: it can be minimized into a small window in the corner of the screen.

Telegram uses end-to-end encryption to protect video calls. To check the security of the connection, the service offers to compare four emoji that the user will see on his screen with the emoji that the interlocutor sees. If the characters match, the call is well protected by encryption, which is used for secret chats and voice calls.

In the future, Telegram is going to add new features to video calls. For example, adding the ability to conduct group video calls.

In addition to video calls, Telegram also has 25 new animated emojis. The telegram was going to launch the video calling function at the same time for iOS, however, the company’s blog indicates that the App Store moderators are delaying the check of the new version. Therefore, owners of mobile devices from Apple will have to wait a few more days.
