Tesla autopilot learned to go around objects dropped on the road

A rare collection of chronicles of road traffic accidents dispenses with records of foreign objects falling on the road that suddenly create an obstacle to traffic. In the new version of the FSD software for Tesla electric vehicles, special attention is paid to maneuvering when encountering such objects.

Eyewitnesses of the evolution of Tesla’s “autopilot” from the pages of the Electrek resource argue that earlier systems of active driver assistance could not always correctly recognize a stationary object that appeared on the way, and also identify it as an obstacle. As a result, in the absence of due vigilance of the driver, who was overly confident in the onboard automation, collisions with obstacles occurred.

As you know, now the beta version of the new FSD (Full Self-Driving) software has already been installed on Tesla electric vehicles, owned by volunteers who have volunteered to take part in extended testing. One of them published a fragment of a video in which his Tesla Model 3 independently adjusts the trajectory when debris appears on the road. At the same time, an obstacle of this type does not stand out on the display in any way, but the car bypasses it on its own.

Elon Musk noted that the current version of the software has been radically redesigned, and his personal experience already suggests that the car can take the head of Tesla from home to work and back with almost no intervention from the owner. At the same time, the company raises the cost of the corresponding option, offering increasingly sophisticated automation functions at a higher price. Whether a car equipped with such software will be able to effectively bypass serious defects in the roadway remains to be determined experimentally.
