Tesla has announced the imminent opening of a new plant in Shanghai to produce Megapack batteries . The automaker will launch the plant in the third quarter and start production in the second quarter of 2024.
In addition to the huge existing EV plant in Shanghai, the new plant will initially produce 10,000 Megapack units per year, equivalent to approximately 40 GWh of energy.
Tesla to open new Megapack battery plant
With the new Shanghai plant, Tesla will take advantage of China’s world-leading battery supply chain to increase production and lower costs for its Megapack lithium-ion battery packs. This will meet the growing demand for energy storage around the world, which is actively shifting to the use of more renewable energy sources.
Tesla makes most of its revenue from its electric vehicle business, but Elon Musk has committed to growing its solar and battery business.
Tesla currently has a mega-factory in Lathrop, California capable of producing 10,000 Megapacks per year.
