Employees share videos with Tesla DVR

A class-action lawsuit was filed against Tesla after it became known that employees were sharing videos of Tesla car owners within the company.

Earlier, Reuters spoke to several Tesla employees who confirmed that Tesla dash cam footage taken in watchdog mode is shared in private or group chats among employees.

These images and videos not only featured dogs, funny road signs, and other harmless content, but also the inside of garages, the owners’ children, and even a man approaching a car naked.

Tesla recently released a statement claiming that most of the data is processed directly on the vehicles and only some is shared with Tesla. Much of this information is anonymous unless it is associated with a “critical security event”.

The lawsuit alleges that the company violated the California State Constitution, California privacy laws, and its own privacy policy, that Tesla misled customers about data privacy. The plaintiffs are asking for Tesla to be prohibited from continuing such behavior and seek actual and punitive damages. The amount exceeds 5 million dollars.

One former Tesla employee quoted by Insider said he taped his car’s cameras for a while after seeing the level of access Tesla had.
