Tesla will offer autopilot by subscription with a regular subscription fee

American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is still hoping to offer a new version of Full Self-Driving (FSD) software in the US before the end of this year. At the same time, Elon Musk admitted that those who wish will be able to pay for the “autopilot” function by subscription with regular payments to the company instead of a lump sum.

As noted by Electrek, one of the subscribers asked Elon Musk about the availability of such an opportunity, citing the inexpediency of buying FSD for permanent use under leasing conditions. Since the vehicle itself under this financing scheme does not belong to the client, it makes little sense to pay for the FSD function for permanent use. Elon Musk said that the opportunity to get the autopilot function by subscription will appear early next year. The one-time payment, we recall, is now $ 10,000. In the case of a subscription, most likely, it will be split into smaller regular payments.

Musk still considers buying the FSD option more financially beneficial. Although the cost of the subscription has not yet been announced, it can be assumed that it will be less attractive in the aggregate of all payments. No decision has been made yet on the mechanism for transferring the “activated autopilot” to the new owner when selling an electric vehicle. Tesla assigns software assets to a specific client, not a machine.
