Tesla will programmatically increase the capacity of Powerwall 2 household batteries by one and a half times

Tesla’s Powerwall 2 batteries will become even more efficient shortly, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter. The company will release a free software update for household energy storage devices next month to increase their peak capacity by more than 50%. Earlier, the head of Tesla said that the company’s household energy products would be sold only in sets from now on.

“The stable and peak power of the Powerwall 2 batteries is higher than advertised. Now that we’ve gathered enough operational data, Tesla can unlock its full potential for free via a software update next month. Depending on the battery’s manufacturing time, this upgrade could increase its capacity by more than 50% at an ambient temperature of 30 degrees Celsius, ” Musk wrote.

The update will come over the air. As Teslarati notes, a 50% increase in power can lead to a faster drain on the battery life in some cases. However, the advantages of increased power still outweigh the possible disadvantages. It is also upsetting that not all Powerwall 2 batteries will receive the aforementioned 50% increase in power, but only those that were produced after a certain date, which, apparently, will be reported in more detail later.

According to last year’s EnergySage report, Tesla Powerwall batteries are the most popular household batteries in the US market. The technology incorporated in them allows the company to compete with other offers in this segment effectively. It is noted that Tesla Powerwalls are the most affordable option, based on storing one kWh of energy.
