Tesla will recall more than 36 thousand electric cars in China due to disconnections of the touch screen

Tesla’s massive Model S and Model X electric vehicle recall program, which kicks off in the US on March 1, has continued in China.

Elon Musk’s company will have to recall 36,126 Model S and Model X electric vehicles in China due to touch-screen shutdowns, according to a report from the People’s Republic of China (SAMR) State Market Regulatory Administration (SAMR) reported by Gasgoo. These vehicles were manufactured at Tesla’s Fremont, California, plant between 2013 and 2018 and export to China.

In fact, the reason for the recall of Tesla electric vehicles in China is the same as in the United States: after reaching about 3000 rewriting cycles, the flash memory in the MCU control unit ceases to function properly, which is reflected in the operation of the touch screen. In this regard, it is disabled while driving, and the driver loses access to the controls.

After years of complaints and to avoid a class-action lawsuit, Tesla has initiated a “warranty extension” in the US to reimburse customers for the cost of replacing media control units or MCs. Tesla was then forced to announce a recall campaign in the United States under pressure from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

As expected, the problems of the American car company do not end there. It was revealed that the German Federal Road Transport Administration (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, KBA) is currently investigating Tesla vehicles for the same touchscreen issues.
