The ISS crew regularly gets rid of excess weight on board

The American Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA has published an interesting video. The video shows how astronauts get rid of debris on the International Space Station.

In the video, NASA astronaut Warren “Woody” Hoburg shows a cylindrical piece of space debris drifting safely towards Earth after Canadian robotic arm Canadarm2 jettisoned it overboard. Eventually the debris must fall into the Earth’s atmosphere. This will only happen in the summer of 2025 and without risk to the International Space Station.

Hoburg noted: “It’s great to get rid of the mass on board the space station.” He then added, pointing to his decommissioned flight equipment “falling to Earth”, “That’s pretty cool.”

Hoburg also said that the ISS crew is doing everything possible to get rid of unnecessary items before the docked spacecraft raises the station’s orbit to prevent it from falling into the Earth’s atmosphere.
