Telecommunication network operators account for 2-3% of global electricity consumption
Experts from the analytical company Guidehouse Insights analyzed the global distributed generation and distributed energy storage market in the telecommunications industry. Based on this analysis, they prepared a forecast for this market’s development for the period up to 2030.
The capacity of distributed generators and energy storage devices that will appear in telecommunications networks this decade is estimated at 122 GW
Telecom operators are increasingly using distributed renewable energy technologies and distributed energy storage systems to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with telecommunications networks. The driving forces are low-income growth, rising electricity prices, and high costs of upgrading LTE and 5G networks, which are expected to more than triple electricity consumption.
Meanwhile, telecom operators account for 2-3% of global energy demand, making them one of the most energy-intensive companies. As more than 90% of running a network’s running costs are spent on energy, operators’ interest in energy-efficient technologies is growing.
Analysts expect telecom operators to install distributed generation and distributed energy storage facilities with a total capacity of 121.9 GW from 2021 to 2030.
