Google has released Android 13 DP1, the first developer pre-release that isn’t ready for everyday use yet, but the direction of development is already visible, and some of the innovations have also come undercover.

The current release of Android 13 is exclusively for developers, but Google has released quite a bit of information about the new version that might be of interest to us as well.

Let’s start with the official schedule, according to which a total of two developers are expected in advance, so there will be another one in March, and the beta program will be launched in April, which means a much more usable system. In June, Android 13 will reach the “platform stability” level, which means it will be very close to the final release, the basic operation will no longer be changed. And the finished system could debut sometime in August or September, as it used to be.

The newly released version reveals that Android 13 is codenamed “Tiramisu” as it is listed on the information page for the version.

Android 13 DP1 is available for the following devices:

  • Pixel 6 and 6 Pro
  • Pixel 5
  • Pixel 5a 5G
  • Pixel 4 and 4 XL
  • Pixel 4a and 4a 5G

Support for Pixel 3 and 3a mobiles has unfortunately ended with Android 12.

Here are some of the highlights Google has highlighted:

  • A new image selection interface is introduced.
  • The color Material You look is extended to each app icon.
  • It will be easier to add custom switches to quick settings from each application.
  • The language will be set separately for each application.
  • They are extending the Project Mainline, the essentials of which is to be able to update certain components of the devices through the Play Store, regardless of the manufacturer.

These are, of course, only a few innovations, even at an early stage of development.
