The head of Bethesda Game Studios spoke about large-scale changes to the engine of The Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield

Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard has previously said that the studio’s internal engine has undergone massive improvements – according to him, the most significant since TES IV: Oblivion. And now the journalists of Gamesindustry.biz raised this topic in a conversation with the head. During the conversation, Howard shared details on the progress of the work in this area.

Howard first stated that there are five times more people working on engine improvements at Bethesda Game Studios than ever before. According to the head, the studio allocates a lot of funds for this team.

Then the leader announced which recognizable elements of the engine would remain – he included the approach to creating open worlds and support for modifications. And then Howard announced that there will be major changes: “From rendering to animations, updates and procedural generation … I don’t want to talk about everything, but many aspects have been revised. It took us longer than we wanted, but the process will help us work on Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6. When people look at the result, they’ll hopefully be as happy with what they see on screen as we enjoy developing games

The name of the engine in question was not mentioned in the conversation. Perhaps Bethesda has modernized its Creation Engine and given it a different name.

In the same interview, Todd Howard revealed the first details of Starfield, Bethesda’s upcoming space-based action RPG. It was for her and The Elder Scrolls 6 that the studio’s internal engine was reworked. If the developers implement everything that they have in mind, then the company’s projects can reach a completely new level of quality – at least in technical terms.
