Current agreement ends this year

Apple and Nokia have signed a long-term patent license agreement that will give Apple access to Nokia’s patented inventions related to 5G and other technologies. Nokia owns more than 20,000 patents, including 5,500 patents related to 5G technology. According to Nokia, the company offers its patents on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms because many of them are deemed necessary. This means companies can license Nokia technology at a reasonable price. True, sometimes disputes arise over the determination of a reasonable price.

The iPhone will not have problems due to patent disputes

Back in 2017, Apple and Nokia entered into a patent licensing agreement after a bitter legal dispute, and that 2017 agreement is due to expire this year, with a new one replacing the previous deal. Nokia and Apple have not announced the terms of the deal, but Nokia will receive payments from Apple. Income related to the latest deal between Nokia and Apple will be reflected in Nokia’s earnings report for the first quarter of 2024.

Earlier it became known that Realme, Vivo, OnePlus and OPPO left the German smartphone market due to a patent dispute with Nokia .
