Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth: The Original Stars

Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth originated the iconic roles of Elphaba and Glinda in the Broadway production of Wicked. Menzel’s powerful performance as Elphaba earned her a Tony Award, while Chenoweth’s portrayal of Glinda brought charm and wit to the role. Both actresses became synonymous with their characters, setting a high standard for future performers.

Fast forward to the movie adaptation, Menzel and Chenoweth made a special appearance in Wicked: Part 1, much to the delight of fans. Their legacy as the original stars remains firmly etched in the hearts of audiences.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande: The New Generation

Taking up the mantle in the film adaptation, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande stepped into the roles of Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. Erivo, known for her extraordinary vocal range and award-winning performances in The Color Purple, brought depth and vulnerability to Elphaba. Meanwhile, Grande’s journey to Glinda was a full-circle moment, having met Chenoweth backstage as a child and now fulfilling her dream of portraying the iconic character. Their chemistry on screen has already garnered immense anticipation ahead of the release of Wicked: Part 2 in November 2025.

Fiyero: From Norbert Leo Butz to Jonathan Bailey

The dashing Prince Fiyero was originally portrayed by Norbert Leo Butz in the Broadway production. In the film adaptation, Jonathan Bailey, known for his role in Bridgerton, brings a fresh charm to the character. Fans eagerly await his take on the role and the dynamics he shares with Erivo and Grande.

Madame Morrible: Carole Shelley and Michelle Yeoh

The Wizard: Joel Grey to Jeff Goldblum

Joel Grey’s performance as the Wizard in the original Broadway production was memorable, solidifying his status as a theater legend. The role in the movie is reimagined by Jeff Goldblum, whose quirky and charismatic acting style promises a unique interpretation of the enigmatic character.

Nessarose and Boq: New Faces in Familiar Roles

Why the Transition Matters

Bringing Wicked from stage to screen is more than a simple adaptation; it’s an opportunity to expand the universe and reach a global audience. The film format allows for elaborate visual effects, expansive settings, and an exploration of nuances that may not be feasible on stage. Moreover, involving the original cast in cameos bridges the gap between the two mediums, celebrating the journey of Wicked over two decades.

What Fans Can Expect

Fans can anticipate breathtaking musical numbers, stunning visuals, and emotionally charged performances in the movie adaptations. From the poignant “Defying Gravity” to the comedic “Popular,” every iconic song is expected to resonate with audiences both familiar and new to the story.
