Fandom acquired popular gaming media sites Giant Bomb and GameSpot from Red Ventures in October 2022. Then it was reported that no one would lose their jobs. But now everything has changed.

Three months later, the employees of Giant Bomb and GameSpot are laid off. The layoffs affected the editors, graphic designers and video producers who were responsible for creating the actual shows. Many say the layoffs came as a complete surprise. Gaming media veterans have banded together to help find jobs for those affected. Some, like IGN’s Cat Bailey, who previously ran US Gamer before it shut down, note that GameSpot has heavy traffic and consistently high ratings for video content.

“If you are trying to understand the meaning of all this, don’t try. I promise this doesn’t make any sense,” Giant Bomb show host and editor Jeff Grubb tweeted.

The news comes shortly after tens of thousands of workers were laid off by major tech companies including Amazing, Google and Microsoft, the latter of which is shedding 10,000 employees, including game developers from its Xbox division.
