The PD-8 engine for the SSJ New aircraft will be certified in September

“ The PD-8 engine should receive a certificate in September and begin certification tests as part of an aircraft. It was a very stressful decision. Now we have shifted [the deadline] almost 16 months to the left,” Bocharov said.

Together with the PD-8, SSJ New will receive several other imported systems and components, the aircraft should become more comfortable. The commissioning of two SSJ New with PD-8 engines should take place before the end of this year.

The PD-8 is a high-thrust turbofan engine developed by Aviadvigatel of Russia. It is a derated version of the PD-14 engine, which is being developed for the Irkut MC-21 airliner. The PD-8 is intended to replace the SaM-146 engine on the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) regional jet.

The PD-8 has a thrust rating of 78 kN (17,500 lbf). It is a two-shaft engine with a single-stage fan, a 14-stage compressor, and a single-stage turbine. The engine is equipped with a full authority digital engine control (FADEC) system.

The PD-8 has been undergoing ground testing since 2021. It made its first flight on an Ilyushin Il-76LL aircraft in December 2022. Flight testing is ongoing, and the engine is expected to be certified in 2023.
