Valve has released a new version of the Proton 5.13-1 project, which is based on Wine and is designed to run on Linux systems games created for the Windows platform and distributed via Steam.

The new version of Proton is translated to Wine 5.13. Developers ported 256 patches from Proton to upstream, making them part of Wine. In addition, the DXVK tool that provides translation of calls to the Vulkan API has been updated to version 1.7.2. audio components with DirectX sound libraries implementation have been updated to version 20.10.

The DirectX 12 implementation has been translated to use VKD3D-Proton, which is a fork from vkd3d, which includes specific changes, optimizations, and improvements necessary to improve the quality of Windows games based on Direct3D 12. Support for all types of video playback was also implemented. through which it was possible to integrate compatibility with games that use old video libraries. The developers have improved support for systems with multiple monitors, integration with the Steam client, and much more.

The new version of Proton adds support for Red Dead Redemption 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Stranding, Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, Final Fantasy XV, Sea of ​​Thieves, Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017), Call of Duty: WWII, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Dirt Rally 2, etc.

Let us recall that the Proton project makes it possible to run games from the Steam catalog in a Linux client, which is supplied for Windows. The package includes DirectX 9/10/11 and DirectX 12 implementations that work by translating DirectX calls to the Vulkan API. The async and futex / fsync mechanisms are supported to improve the performance of multi-threaded games.
