The share of Steam users with VR headsets exceeded 2%

The latest statistics from Steam report that the user base of virtual reality headsets has surpassed 2% of the total number of people using a gaming platform for the first time. As the resource UploadVR points out, each of the 50 Steam users used a virtual reality headset.

Facebook, Valve, and HTC do not provide sales statistics for their VR headsets, so the monthly Steam Hardware Survey remains the most reliable indicator of a headset’s popularity. Data for November 2020 indicated that 1.96% of the total platform users use various virtual reality headsets. The most popular headsets were Oculus Rift S (25.09%), HTC Vive (17.12%), and Oculus Quest (16.77%). According to the latest data, the user base has grown to 2.13%.

Curiously, the Other category accounted for an impressive share of the monthly growth in headset popularity. It accounted for as much as 18.51% of VR users. Considering the significant (9%) decrease in the number of users of the original Oculus Quest model, it is very likely that at least part of this 18.51% was the new Oculus Quest 2 headsets that went on sale at the end of last year. Unfortunately, it is still impossible to find out the exact share of Facebook VR headsets, again precisely because they could fall into this very category “Others”.

The growth in users of the more expensive Oculus Rift S and Valve Index seems to have stalled. Windows MR headsets have shown an increase in popularity for the first time in the past 8 months. It is very likely that this credit belongs to the HP Reverb G2 model, which went on sale relatively recently.

The HTC Vive Cosmos Elite model with support for base stations for the SteamVR standard also showed a slight increase. This is likely due to the fact that the Valve Index headsets, for which these base stations were originally designed, were in short supply during the holiday period.
