“Mad” Mike Whiddett, a professional drifter with a passion for rotary engines, not only tunes factory Mazda models, but also builds his own cars.

This time he created the world’s first five-rotor power plant and a unique machine called the 787D.

The Wankel engine has a roughly triangular shaped rotor rotating around an eccentric shaft, and each of the three sides undergoes intake, compression, ignition and exhaust phases as it rotates. Most Mazda road models used two-rotor engines, but the Le Mans-winning Mazda 787B was equipped with a four-rotor engine.

“Mad” Mike went even further with his five-rotor engine. According to Carvibz, the engine capacity is 3.3 liters. There are no details about power output. The video confirms that the power plant was very loud.

The Japanese tuner Rocket Bunny is responsible for the body; the car is based on the fourth generation Mazda RX-7 (FD). However, the tubular chassis and radically modified engine suggest that little remains of the original sports car.

Whiddett debuted the 787D at Mad Mike’s Summer Bash 6 on December 2 in New Zealand. He plans to use it for drifting, but so far there are no videos on the Internet showing how this car slides.
