Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 Remaster Drops Career Mode

The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise has long been a favorite among skateboarding game enthusiasts. However, the upcoming Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 Remaster has sparked controversy among fans, as it has been confirmed that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 (THPS4) will not feature the classic career mode. This decision has left players frustrated, as it alters the unique experience that made THPS4 stand out in the original 2002 version.

The Absence of Career Mode in THPS4 Remaster

According to reports initially surfaced on Reddit and later confirmed by Activision, THPS4 in the remastered edition will remove the free-roam career mode. Instead, it will adopt the traditional two-minute session-based goal system, similar to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 (THPS3) and earlier installments.

What Made Career Mode Special in THPS4?

The original THPS4 introduced a unique approach compared to its predecessors. Players were given the freedom to explore levels at their own pace, take on challenges without a strict timer, and truly immerse themselves in the world of skateboarding. The open-ended gameplay was widely appreciated for its ability to provide an organic experience, allowing players to progress at their own speed.

Why Fans Are Upset

The decision to revert to the older format has triggered significant backlash from the community. Here are some of the key concerns:

Loss of Open-Ended Gameplay

  • Many players loved THPS4’s sandbox-style experience, where they could explore, complete objectives, and find secrets at their leisure.
  • Removing the free-roam career mode makes the game feel more restrictive and repetitive.

A Step Backward in Game Design

  • THPS4 had evolved beyond the traditional two-minute timer, offering a fresh take on the franchise.
  • Returning to the structured time-based goals makes the game feel less innovative.

Activision’s Role in the Controversy

  • Some fans believe this change was made to simplify development rather than enhance player experience.
  • Activision has faced similar criticism in the past for decisions that prioritize convenience over innovation.

What Will Replace Career Mode in THPS4 Remaster?

Instead of the free-roam career mode, the remastered version will use a goal-based system, where players will complete objectives within two-minute sessions. This approach is reminiscent of THPS3 and earlier games, making it feel like a hybrid experience rather than a direct remaster of THPS4.

Potential Impact on Sales and Reception

The decision to remove career mode could significantly impact the game’s reception:

  • Long-time fans may feel alienated, leading to potential lower sales.
  • Newer players unfamiliar with THPS4 may not mind the change, but those who cherished the original will be disappointed.
  • The game may struggle to live up to expectations if the nostalgia factor is compromised.

Is There Still Hope for Change?

While Activision has confirmed the removal of the career mode, there is always a possibility that strong fan feedback could lead to changes before release. Developers sometimes release patches or updates based on community response, so there remains a slim chance for an update post-launch.

Release Date and Platforms

Despite the controversy, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 Remaster is set to release on July 11 for PC and major gaming consoles. Fans will have to wait and see whether the game delivers an experience that honors the legacy of the original THPS4.
