The Invitation and Planned Event

Trump’s Participation at the NABJ Convention

Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to participate in a Q&A session with Black political journalists during the opening day of the NABJ Convention on July 31, 2024. The session will feature a discussion on issues currently affecting the Black community and will be moderated by three prominent Black female political journalists: Rachel Scott, senior congressional correspondent for ABC News; Harris Faulkner, anchor of The Faulkner Focus and co-host of Outnumbered on Fox News; and Kadia Goba, politics reporter at Semafor. This event will be live-streamed on the NABJ’s YouTube and Facebook channels but will not be open to the public.

NABJ’s Statement and Intentions

Ken Lemon, NABJ President, stated on the group’s website, “We look forward to our attendees hearing from former President Trump on the critical issues our members and their audiences care about most. While NABJ does not endorse political candidates as a journalism organization, we understand the serious work of our members, and welcome the opportunity for them to ask the tough questions that will provide the truthful answers Black Americans want and need to know.”

Backlash from Prominent Black Journalists

Social Media Reactions

News of Trump’s invitation led to a flurry of backlash on social media, with many Black journalists expressing their disappointment and frustration.

  • Jim Trotter, a sports writer for The Athletic and NABJ’s 2023 journalist of the year, tweeted, “This is such a poor decision by @NABJ that it’s difficult to put into words. 🤦🏾‍♂️”
  • Ashley Nicole Moss, CBS Sports analyst, expressed her discontent, stating, “Extremely disappointing from [the] @NABJ. This is supposed to be a safe place for Black journalists to connect/network. It’s a space to uplift current and upcoming journalists. To remind each other that we belong. He has absolutely ZERO business being in a room like that/this.”
  • Dave Jordan, journalist turned publicist, questioned the decision, tweeting, “Why on earth would @NABJ engage with a man who repeatedly vilifies and debases the free press? This is beyond comprehension.”

Concerns and Criticisms

Several journalists highlighted Trump’s contentious relationship with the press and his history of derogatory comments towards Black journalists.

  • April Reign, media strategist and creator of the #OscarsSoWhite movement, tweeted at NABJ chair Tia Mitchell: “This is the way 45 is touting his appearance before @nabj this week. Was this what you wanted [Tia Mitchell]? He is already lying and he isn’t even in Chicago yet. This is your legacy.”
  • Carron J. Phillips, sports writer, strongly condemned the decision: “This is the single dumbest and worst decision in NABJ history. Whoever made this call is an idiot. And I’ll say it to their face this week.”
  • Ameshia Cross, Democratic strategist and political pundit, criticized the invitation: “The same Trump that attacked Black journalists from the stump. The same Trump who is attacking DEI, can’t get ahead of his own racism and sexism. And the guy who wants to dissolve journalism as we know it, that’s who is speaking at #NABJ24 w/ record attendance. C’mon y’all”

Support and Defense of the Decision

Not all reactions were negative. Some journalists defended NABJ’s decision to invite Trump, arguing the importance of holding political figures accountable through direct questioning.

  • Jemele Hill, contributing writer for The Atlantic, tweeted, “As journalists, we can never be afraid to tackle someone like Trump. The reality is that he is running for president and needs to be treated as such. Being questioned by journalists is part of the job, and especially important in the company of Black journalists. Mainstream media keeps trying to convince us that he actually is gaining support among Black people. Let’s see if it’s true.”

Broader Implications and Discussions

The Role of Journalism in Politics

The backlash against Trump’s invitation underscores a broader debate about the role of journalism in politics, particularly when it comes to controversial figures. The NABJ’s decision has ignited discussions about journalistic integrity, the responsibilities of media organizations, and the need for balanced and unbiased reporting.

Impact on NABJ and Its Members

The controversy has undoubtedly affected the NABJ and its members, creating divisions and sparking intense debates. The organization now faces the challenge of addressing the concerns of its members while upholding its mission to promote journalistic excellence and diversity.
