On Tuesday, he is to present a long-term review of the national security strategy to parliament.
Britain needs to strengthen its ability to conduct cyberattacks against foreign enemies, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said. The announcement precedes the release of a national security report, slated for next week.
UK Prime Minister Says Country Should Increase Cyberattack Capabilities
“Cybersila is revolutionizing the way we live and fight wars, just like aviation did 100 years ago,” Johnson said in a statement released yesterday.
Johnson is due to present a long-term review of the national security strategy to parliament on Tuesday. According to media reports, consideration of this document may result in a reduction in the personnel of the armed forces.
In 2019, Britain’s military spending amounted to $ 59 billion, or 2.1% of national income. This is more than in any other European country, but much less than in the United States, where the share of military spending is 3.5% of the budget.
Johnson said the National Cyber Force (NCF), including spies, defense officials and academics, will have a permanent base in northern England as the government tries to spur regional development outside London. The Cyber Force was created last year along with a special army regiment specialized in cyber warfare. Their tasks include, in particular, the fight against enemy air defense systems and tracking the cell phones of people whom the government considers criminals or terrorists.
