Updated Tesla Model S and Model X switch to 12-volt lithium-ion batteries

Electric vehicles mostly use separate traditional 12-volt batteries to power lighting, on-board multimedia, and “power accessories”. This separation makes it possible not to depend on the state of the traction battery. Tesla replaced the auxiliary battery in the updated Model S and Model X with a lithium-ion battery with the usual voltage rating.

This innovation with reference to the comments of Elon Musk was reported by the resource Electrek. According to the Tesla founder, a lithium-ion battery provides an increase in capacity compared to a traditional lead-acid battery and is also able to withstand more charge and discharge cycles, not inferior to a traction battery in this indicator. On past generations of Tesla electric vehicles, traditional 12-volt batteries were often asked for a replacement much earlier than in cars with an internal combustion engine with similar mileage.

Of course, the owners always have a chance to replace the standard battery with a more durable one, but the modernization undertaken by Tesla will relieve them of this need. The company’s long-term plans also include the transition to an on-board power supply network with a voltage of 48 V, which will make the cross-section of the conductors smaller and reduce the cost, but Tesla is not yet ready to name the timing of such a migration.
