US iPhone users spend an average of $ 138 on apps per year
2020 marked a record year for spending on the App Store, spending more per iPhone user than ever before. While App Store sales grew 42% in 2016, the 38% growth in 2020 is well above the 27% increase from 2018 to 2019.
Specifically, spending on mobile games per device skyrocketed in 2020, jumping from $ 53.80 in 2019 to $ 76.80, up 43% year on year. The biggest source of spending on mobile games came from the puzzle category, which includes games like Candy Crush Saga and Gardenscapes. In addition to mobile games, spending on other entertainment apps also rose, with an increase of 26%.
This confirms that mobile users generally spent more in the past year during the global health crisis. It is not yet known if this trend will continue in 2021.
