After several months of testing, Facebook finally realized the function of payment for goods through the WhatsApp messenger. This was officially announced today. The first country where you can use the messenger for payment was Brazil. Everything works through Facebook Pay – the payment system of the parent company, with an attached Visa or MasterCard. WhatsApp notes that the payment service is free for consumers (that is, there is no commission for transactions), but legal entities pay 3.99% for processing payments. You can confirm the money transfer using either a six-digit PIN code or a fingerprint.

Despite the fact that the function itself was expected, its introduction in Brazil is surprising. The fact is that the new service was tested among users in India for several months, so it was logical to assume that it will also start in India. In addition, India bypasses Brazil several times in the number of active users per month: 400 million against 120 million, respectively. But in India, so far, apparently, all issues with the local regulator have not been resolved, so the company decided to start from another country.

So far, nothing has been said about expanding the functionality of the manager in other countries. Apparently, payment via WhatsApp will not appear immediately in other regions, as there is no universal payment mechanism: for example, in India, instead of Facebook Pay, the local UPI (Unified Payments Interface) system is used. Probably in a number of other countries, WhatsApp will also use local payment systems.
