Sales will end this year

Toyota has clarified why it has decided to stop sales of the Camry sedan in the Japanese market , focusing on other countries where the 43-year-old flagship model remains popular.

Last year, Toyota sold about 600,000 Camry sedans worldwide, but only 6,000 were bought in Japan. That is, Japan accounts for only 1% of global Camry sales.

That being said, more than 295,000 Camrys were sold in the US last year. Observers confirm that sedans are becoming less popular in the Japanese market as buyers lean more towards SUVs, crossovers and minivans. In the US, there is a shift towards SUVs and pickups. Toyota still sells Century, Corolla and Mirai sedans in Japan, as well as other smaller vehicles.

The well-known publication Nikkei called the Camry “Toyota’s global strategic vehicle.” Over several decades, Toyota has sold about 1.3 million Camrys in Japan. The car has changed 10 generations and has been sold with a total circulation of more than 21 million units in more than 100 countries.

Approximately 13 million Camrys have been sold in the US. The 2023 model starts at $27,315.
