Microsoft has warned of a large-scale update of computers running an outdated version of the Windows 10 operating system. According to the company’s website, support for all Tens and Windows 10 Server versions 1903 will be discontinued on December 8, and therefore these operating systems will no longer receive security updates.
To avoid incompatibility with applications and hardware, computers running older Windows 10 will automatically be downgraded to the newer build – 1909. The update is expected to be sent to millions of PCs in the coming weeks.
Windows 10 will be forced to update for millions of users
Compared to version 1903, 1909 contains few changes, so the upgrade process will go unnoticed for most users.
In turn, notes Neowin, 1909 itself is far from the most “fresh” version of Windows 10. Why Microsoft did not choose the latest October 2020 Update (20H2), released last month, or earlier Windows 10 2004, is unclear. Support for 1909 will expire next May, so users are likely to be migrated to the new version again in the coming months.
Typically, Microsoft starts to force updates to outdated versions of Windows 10 about six months before the end of support. However, this did not happen with assembly 1903 – perhaps the company feared disrupting the work of millions of computers around the world during the period of self-isolation and the transition to the remote control. In April this year, also for reasons related to the COVID-19 coronavirus infection pandemic, Microsoft moved the end of support date for Windows 10 version 1809 from May 12 to November 10.
