Windows XP source code made public

It became known that the source code of the Windows XP operating system was published in the public domain. It first appeared on the 4chan resource, and later added links for downloading via a torrent client and the Mega file sharing service. Although the corresponding thread on 4chan only lasted a few hours, some people managed to download the alleged Windows XP code.

As a reminder, the Windows XP operating system was released in August 2001, and support was discontinued in 2014. This means that since then Microsoft has not released security updates and general fixes for the software platform, so its use may be unsafe. Despite this, analysts estimate that Windows XP is still installed on 1% of computers worldwide.

It is worth noting that the current leak of the operating system source code is practically useless for malware developers since the platform is not widely used. However, this code may shed light on how some mechanisms work in newer versions of the OS. This is due to the fact that Microsoft developers often use practically unchanged pieces of code from old operating systems to ensure backward compatibility. Windows XP source code can also be used by enthusiasts who create custom assemblies to add support for modern devices and other components that can ensure OS compatibility with current hardware solutions.

There is no doubt that Microsoft will respond to the leak and try to prevent the distribution of the Windows XP source code. Representatives of the company have not yet commented on this issue.
