36 cores with a frequency of 3.6 GHz: another Intel Ice Lake-SP processor lit up in GeekBench

Last week we published data on the tests of the engineering sample Ice Lake-SP Xeon Silver in CPU-Z, and today another test result of Intel’s new server chip appeared on the Internet. This modification has 36 cores. And this is not the most powerful model – previously there was information that the Ice Lake family will have chips with 38 cores.

The data source was the GeekBench benchmark, in which the results of testing the Asustek Y4R-A1-ASUS-G1 server appeared. The server has two 36-core Intel Family 6 Model 106 Stepping 5 processors (which turns out to be Ice Lake-SP), as well as 512GB of DDR4 RAM.

The system scored 946 points in the single-core test, and 35,812 points in the multi-core test. Based on the specifications, which can be found on the test results page, the processor has an L2 cache of 1.25 MB per core (45 MB in total) and 54 MB of L3 cache. This matches the data that Intel provided in August 2020. The base frequency of the chip is 3.6 GHz, but there is no information about the maximum frequency of this particular chip.

The competitor to Intel’s new server processor is the 64-core AMD EPYC 7542. The server system based on it in GeekBench scores 1077 points in a single-threaded test and 42,972 points in a multi-threaded test, respectively. A competitor from AMD has a base frequency of 2.9 GHz with acceleration up to 3.4 GHz, but the Intel server chip is created using a 10nm process technology and, according to the company itself, it is more productive than EPYC in some HPC tasks.
