Sony unveils a7S III full-frame mirrorless camera: 4K / 120p continuous recording, improved autofocus and more

As expected, Sony released the a7S III, the third generation of its full-frame mirrorless camera with an emphasis on video shooting. It includes a new 12-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, the latest Bionz XR processor, improved autofocus, ultra-high-definition electronic viewfinder (EVF), and 4K video capture at 120fps.

In addition, Sony claims that the a7s III can also record continuously for at least an hour of 4K video at 60fps. The company said this was made possible by upgrading the chamber’s heat dissipation system – and not even a fan was needed.

The combination of the new sensor and processor enables a native ISO range of 80-102,400, which can be expanded to 40-409,600, and achieves the ability to capture 15 stops of dynamic range. Sony claims the sensor reads data twice as fast as the a7S II, significantly reducing the floating shutter effect. The more sensitive autofocus system has 759 PDAF points on the sensor and provides human, eye, and animal recognition. Sony says color reproduction has also improved markedly.

By the way, the Sony A7S III also stands out as the first consumer camera to support the new high-speed CFexpress Type A memory cards. The physical design of the a7S III is very similar to the a7R IV (including the build quality and the presence of a stabilizer inside the case), however, there are some notable exceptions. For example, the electronic viewfinder has the highest resolution we’ve seen so far, with a resolution of 9.44 million dots. It’s also huge and offers 0.91x magnification.

In addition, this is the first Sony Alpha series camera to feature a fully rotatable LCD display, and almost all parameters can be changed using touch input (finally). The menu system has been improved to make it easier to navigate. The camera is equipped with a full-size HDMI port, headphone and microphone jacks, dual-band Wi-Fi module, USB Power Delivery support. It has two slots for dual memory cards, both of which can operate with or SD CFexpress Type-A.

Among the mass of video capabilities, one can distinguish recording in 10-bit 4: 2: 2 format with compression in H.264 or H.265 formats, the ability to output in 16-bit RAW format at up to 60 frames / s, support for S-Log2 / 3 and HLG. The a7S III does not support DCI or Super 35. Sony is promising to release the A7S III in late September for $ 3499 in the US market.
