All Huawei smartphones with EMUI 11 can be upgraded to Harmony OS

Huawei yesterday unveiled the second version of its own operating system for mobile devices called Harmony OS and announced plans to start shipping smartphones based on it as early as next year. The company has now clarified its strategy for the products currently running on Android.

Speaking to the online publication Android Authority after yesterday’s conference, a Huawei spokesman said that devices that receive the EMUI 11 update based on Android 10 can be upgraded to Harmony OS in the future. He clarified that the company will not impose its own operating system on existing customers, but instead will offer the OS as an additional upgrade to all interested. Huawei is expected to continue supporting Android smartphones in the near future, so there is no reason for their owners to worry.

The company has not announced a full list of devices that will receive Harmony OS, but the most obvious candidates for the update are the Mate 30 and P40 series smartphones. It is likely that Harmony OS will prove to be a great Android alternative on Huawei smartphones that do not support Google services. For owners of Google Play devices, the choice is not so obvious.
