Amazon reveals antenna specifications for its satellite internet – smaller than SpaceX Starlink

Amazon has revealed some details about the antennas that users will use to connect to the company’s satellite internet. This means that Amazon continues to implement Project Kuiper, in which the company intends to provide Internet connectivity for people living in remote and hard-to-reach regions.

The company has reportedly tested phased-array antennas. It turned out that with a grid diameter of 30 cm, the antenna provides “a maximum throughput of up to 400 Mbit / s .” This antenna is suitable for streaming 4K video from satellites in geostationary orbit.

It is worth saying that in July of this year, Amazon received permission from the US Federal Communications Commission to launch 3,236 satellites as part of the Project Kuiper project. It is assumed that the satellites included in the Amazon constellation will be located at an altitude of 590 to 630 km from the Earth’s surface. The company’s goal is to provide people in remote regions around the world with the ability to connect to the Internet.

Amazon claims that reducing the size of the user terminals will reduce the cost of manufacturing equipment, as well as make the service of connecting to the satellite network more affordable for customers. The current announcement suggests that Amazon’s user terminal will be more compact than the antenna offered by SpaceX, which is also deploying a constellation of satellites to provide Internet access to users around the world.
