Another hint of Ampere shortage: NVIDIA drop pre-orders for GeForce RTX 30
The choice of Samsung as the contractor for the production of 8nm Ampere gaming series GPUs has alerted many ordinary people, and fears of a shortage of GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards are already beginning to be confirmed. At the very least, NVIDIA partners and the company itself will not accept pre-orders for this series of video cards. The principle “who did not have time is late” will work.
The pages of the NVIDIA online store already contain information about the prices and timing of the start of sales of GeForce RTX 3090, GeForce RTX 3080, and GeForce RTX 3070, although the junior representative of the series does not have a specific date next to the description yet. It is not possible to pre-order reference design video cards, as NVIDIA representatives admitted on Reddit during a Q&A session with resource users.
This limitation applies not only to video cards of the Founders Edition series. An EVGA spokesman confirmed via Twitter that the brand’s graphics cards using the original design will also not be available for pre-order from the manufacturer’s online store.
Finally, MSI employees in a recent broadcast aligned with the above, thus confirming the global nature of the ban on pre-orders for this series of graphics cards. In the context of the perceived shortage, all buyers will find themselves on an equal footing at the start of sales. The ability to buy a video card will depend on the quickness of the client himself and the benevolence of fortune. On the other hand, the absence of pre-orders for a certain period will eliminate speculation with new video cards that will be put up for resale by individuals.
The Guru3D website shares other interesting information. It turns out that the preparation for the announcement of the Ampere gaming video cards was carried out in such strict secrecy that even NVIDIA partners developing their products until the last moment did not receive full-fledged drivers that would allow us to assess the performance level of new products in games. This explains the almost complete absence of leaks about the test results of GeForce RTX 3090, GeForce RTX 3080, and GeForce RTX 3070 at the current stage, which is quite close to entering the market.
NVIDIA partners limited themselves to software tools for testing the developed video cards, which at the output gave either a positive or negative conclusion, without offering any quantitative estimates. NVIDIA partners still cannot name the frequency characteristics of the presented video cards, although two weeks are left before the start of sales of the same GeForce RTX 3080.
