Apple has figured out how to display a 3D image on a flat screen iPhone and iPad

Apple is exploring the possibility of displaying 3D images on a flat-screen iPhone or iPad. The company has already received a patent for this technology, although this does not guarantee that the product described in it will be presented to the general public. Moreover, in a patent application, Apple said that the demonstration of voluminous content on a tablet and smartphone could have several side effects that can make the user dizzy.

It is much easier to implement work with three-dimensional objects of augmented reality using an AR / VR headset since the device follows the user’s eyes, which makes it possible to demonstrate the “correct” picture. At the same time, the iPhone or iPad will not be able to track the user’s gaze so accurately, which will lead to side effects.

The patent describes technology similar to 3D glasses but does not describe how to ensure that each eye is prevented from seeing an image directed at the other. The company plans to implement line-by-line matrix control by showing two different images in alternating rows of pixels. It is noted that this can be quite problematic, and to reduce blur, you will have to use strobing or pulse backlighting.

Most of the patent describes the technical nuances of implementing this feature. It should be noted that Apple is not the first in this field. LG and RED tried to launch smartphones with 3D screens at different times, but their devices became unclaimed in the market.
