Apple has significantly increased computer sales even before the release of its own M1 chip

Apple’s branded computer revenues in the third quarter of 2020 were up 50 per cent year-over-year. This is partly due to the increased demand for laptops during the pandemic, driven by the massive shift to remote work and distance learning. However, the global PC market grew by only 18 per cent during this period, and Apple managed to significantly cover that figure.

In a note to investors, US bank analyst Goldman Sachs suggested that Apple’s market share will continue to grow for the foreseeable future as many users turn their attention to the company’s new ARM computers. In terms of the PC market as a whole, the analyst noted that OEMs shipped a total of 81.8 million PCs in the third quarter, up 11 per cent from Goldman Sachs’ preliminary estimate. These numbers show a market growth of 18 per cent over last year. The average price of a computer was $ 764, up 3 per cent from last year. It is assumed that the upward trend of the market will continue in the fourth quarter of this year and possibly in the first quarter of the next.

Noticeable growth in sales of Apple computers against this background is due to the fact that the Mac lineup consists primarily of mobile computers. Global trends are such that compared to 2019, the desktop PC market sank 18 per cent, and the entire market growth was provided by laptop sales, which soared by as much as 36 per cent in the third quarter. Lenovo became the market leader, but HP and Dell lost ground. As for Apple, its sales have gone up noticeably.

According to research by Goldman Sachs, 2020 will be the second consecutive year of growth in the PC market, but there is little hope that the dynamics will continue until the end of next year.
