BMW will switch to electric only half of new cars by 2030

BMW is in no hurry to sacrifice its traditions in the development of internal combustion engines. Now in its range of about 13 models with traction electric motors, by 2023, their number will double, and by the end of the decade, only half of the vehicles sold by the brand will be electric vehicles. This is much less than the competition.

Subsidiary brand Mini, as already noted, will abandon internal combustion engines more decisively – from the middle of the decade, all cars of the brand will be hybrids, and by the end of the decade, they will become electric vehicles. BMW is forecasting a sharp increase in pre-tax profit this year, with progress seen across all market segments, from Mini to Rolls-Royce, Reuters notes.

As a reminder, Volkswagen aims to increase electric vehicles’ share in the range of new models sold in Europe to 70% by 2030. The conservatism of BMW, which will form only half of its sales range with the help of electric vehicles, is not so obvious. At the very least, company representatives promise that by 2023, purebred electric cars will be present in 90% of BMW’s market niches. The electric car BMW i4 will be presented this year, three months ahead of schedule.

Many automakers have chosen 2030 as the milestone for the transition to electric traction due to some countries’ decisions to ban the sale of new ICE cars by that time. Volvo plans to switch to electric power by the end of the decade, as will the European dealership of Ford Motor. According to BMW representatives, the company can accelerate the model range’s electrification if required by the market in certain regions.
