Canada has blocked Huawei’s access to 5G without an official announcement

Canada is the only member of the Five Eyes intelligence exchange network that has not officially blocked Huawei’s access to 5G networks. However, the Canadian government actually did so, postponing a decision on the matter for a time long enough to force telecommunications companies to abandon the services of the Chinese equipment manufacturer.

This strategy allows Canada to remain on the side of both China and the United States in their clash over Huawei Technologies, according to knowledgeable sources of Reuters.

Canada and its Five Eyes allies – the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia – are under pressure from a leading member of the alliance, the United States, to abandon Huawei equipment and services for security reasons.

For two years, Canada has been “pondering” the possibility of Huawei’s involvement in the rollout of 5G networks, despite the growing impatience of market participants. As a result, in June, the country’s two largest wireless providers, Bell Canada Telus Corp, teamed up with Sweden’s Ericsson and Finland’s Nokia Oyj to create fifth-generation (5G) telecommunication networks, abandoning Huawei’s participation in the project despite using its 4G equipment.

Rogers Communications, another major operator, announced in 2018 that it will use 5G equipment from Ericsson.

“ Lack of a solution will ultimately solve all problems, ” a source familiar with the approach of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government told Reuters.
