China has the most patents in this field

China is increasing its presence in the race to develop innovative batteries to replace lithium-ion models, according to the Nikkei. A count of battery-related patents over the past 10 years shows that China is in the lead, accounting for more than half of all patents.

In December 2022, Chinese companies filed 5.4 thousand out of 9.8 thousand patents in this area. At the same time, Japanese enterprises have issued about 1.1 thousand patents, American – 719, South Korean – 595.

An estimate of the number of patents for sodium-ion batteries shows that China surpasses Japan and the United States, and Chinese companies are expected to begin mass production of these batteries this year. They are planned to be widely used in electric vehicles.

It is expected that the cost of materials for the production of sodium-ion batteries will be reduced by 60%, since the proportion of rare earth metals is reduced in their composition.
