Cumulative update KB5001330 for Windows 10 caused a bunch of critical issues

Certain Windows 10 PC configurations face serious issues with the recent cumulative update KB5001330, with users reporting installation issues, performance issues, user profile errors, and even a dangerous system crash.

Earlier this week, Microsoft released the April Cumulative Updates for supported OS versions. For version 20H2 / 2004, the company introduced Windows 10 KB5001330, a must-have security update to fix several vulnerabilities and issues caused by the previous update, including issues with printers. However, according to numerous reports ( 1, 2, 3, 4 ), a growing number of users are unable to install the latest Windows update on their computers.

Problematic devices trying to install the April 2021 security patches may receive one of the following error messages: 0x800f081f, 0x800f0984, and 0x800f0922. “I get the aforementioned error 0x800f081f anytime I try to install this update,” one user wrote.

“I am getting a consistent installation failure of KP 5001330 with error code 0x 800f 0984. This is happening on Surface Studio 2 and Pro 7. For the second month in a row, Microsoft has been unable to release a normal cumulative update for my systems. The installation pauses at 20%, then again at 73% (as opposed to 40% last month), then at 100%, after which an error is thrown, ”said another.

On rare occasions, the infamous temporary user profile error also appears. The last time this was reported was in December: a new user profile is created when the operating system boots after applying the update. If this happens, user files and settings (such as wallpaper) may disappear.

“I can no longer log into my computer after updating. The system reports: “The user profile service has not logged in. The user profile cannot be loaded,” one of the commenters said. “The same thing: the system registered me in the guest profile,” another confirmed the problem. “ Windows didn’t let me do anything as an administrator. In the end, I sent the computer back to the company, as it was new, and they dropped it, ”wrote the third victim.

Fortunately, there is a workaround for the profile problem: either roll back the update or manually move the user files.

Finally, on Reddit, users reported that many starts having problems with games after the update: stuttering, a serious drop in frame rates, and so on. The issue can be resolved by manually uninstalling the update. There have been relatively few reports of such errors: apparently, they are not very common.

As usual, there are reports of system crashes and BSODs. “This update broke Windows for other users and me. DURING THE UPDATE, the PC issues a BSOD, informing that a certain driver is no longer present or is not supported. I let Windows “fix” itself, and the update was installed, but then my computer gave BSODs twice in a few hours. I removed the update. I’m not the only one with whom this happened, so I advise you not to install this update, “ – said one of the users.

“Windows team the Update, and you know about the problem with the processors Zen 2 and Zen  3 – after updating AMD systems to KB 5001330 running Windows 10 is no longer loaded,” – wrote a certain Eric Smith (Eric Smith) on Twitter.

Some users have also reported issues with DNS and public folders after applying the April update. In the document, the Dentrix support service confirmed the problem and advised either to remove KB5001330 or go through a special fix procedure to edit the registry.
