Dell XPS 15 9500 laptops won’t close properly due to display hinge issues

Previously, owners of Dell XPS laptop computers faced a problem, which was a poorly fixed touchpad, which caused it to sway during use and cause certain inconveniences. Dell insisted the issue did not affect functionality but ended up offering users a free fix for the defect. Now it became known about the incorrect operation of the display hinges of the same laptops.

Messages began to appear on Reddit and the Dell tech support forum, in which users complain that the laptop lid opens spontaneously, as soon as it is lifted from a flat surface. The front of the lid rises about a centimeter as if the magnetic clamps could not hold it.

Some users suggest that the problem lies in the too-low weight of the Full HD matrix, which may not exert enough force to trigger the magnets. For reference, the Full HD panel weighs significantly less than the 4K touch panel that this laptop also comes with. It has also been observed that pushing on the back of the hinges temporarily resolves the problem, which may indicate a malfunctioning hinge mechanism. However, this will remain just a guess until Dell acknowledges the problem.

According to users, in some cases, the company changes laptops that are affected by this problem. However, often replaced devices show the same problem. Dell itself has not yet commented on the situation.
