The echo of street protests continues to ring in high American offices. Leading Democrats, including presidential contender Joe Biden, categorically rejected the idea of disbanding the police, which was increasingly voiced by the most radical protesters. Meanwhile, the head of the White House, Donald Trump, who continues to harshly criticize the demonstrators, is rapidly losing his rating and turns to recipes checked in 2016 to save popularity.
“No, I do not support depriving the police of funding,” – in one phrase, the virtually guaranteed Democratic candidate from the Democratic Party, Joe Biden, unambiguously outlined his position in the dispute that erupted in the camp of his political supporters.
Recall that calls for the deprivation of law enforcement funding or their dispersal, in general, are increasingly heard during the protests that swept the country after the death of black American George Floyd. Some activists, in particular, call police units “black-hunting patrols,” and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey booed after refusing to disperse the police department.
“I am in favour of federal assistance to the police depending on how much they (policemen— “ Kommersant ” ) comply with some basic standards of dignity and honor and how much they can show that they really protect both the whole society and each of its members,” said Mr Biden.
This position was very strongly supported by senior Democrats in both houses of Congress. “I fear that this thesis may be used to divert attention (from important problems. – “ Kommersant ” ). Both Mr. Kleiburn and his party members have something to be afraid of: the Republicans are just waiting to cling to this radical idea and portray all political opponents as idealists terribly far from the people.
