DOOM Eternal’s first story expansion turned out to be a standalone one – no main game required

DOOM Eternal Executive Producer Marty Stratton and Game Director Hugo Martin in an interview with PCGamesN shared new details about The Ancient Gods’ story expansion, Part One.

DOOM

According to Stretton, DOOM Eternal surpassed DOOM (2016) in terms of the number of players completing the story campaign. The producer called the share of such users “fair”.

“This is important because we want to bring the DLC to as many people as possible. You don’t even need to own DOOM Eternal to buy the addon and start playing, ” Stretton said.

Martin also added that id Software is “very proud of the scale” of The Ancient Gods, Part One. In particular, the developer called the upcoming expansion “no less grandiose” than DOOM Eternal.

“A lot of people associate add-ons with being small – like the TV version of a movie that the main game was. For us, this is largely a two-part movie. As great as [DOOM Eternal] itself, ” Martin said.

The events of The Ancient Gods, Part One will unfold after the finale of DOOM Eternal: the victory of the Doom Slayer over the creatures of Hell created “an imbalance of forces that threatens all things” The hero will have to “return to Urdak to decide the fate of the universe again”.

The Ancient Gods, Part One will go on sale on October 20 this year for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia. Despite being independent, so far the add-on is available only as part of the “First-Year Pass”.
