Beyond International Traffic: Global Air Travel Trends in 2023

While Dubai International claimed the top spot for international travel, ACI World Director General, Luis Felipe de Oliveira, provided insights into broader trends in the global air travel industry for 2023. He observed that international travel fueled the growth in 2023, driven by factors such as China’s reopening and a continued interest in travel despite macroeconomic uncertainties.

The ranking shift within the top 10 busiest airports (combining domestic and international traffic) also reveals interesting trends. Notably, DXB secured the second position for the first time, showcasing its overall dominance in passenger traffic. Additionally, Tokyo Haneda International Airport made a significant leap, climbing from 16th to 5th place. This rise underlines the growing importance of Asian aviation hubs.

Finally, Doha International Airport rejoined the top 10 rankings, jumping to the 8th position with a growth of 6.3% compared to 2019. This indicates a potential recovery and growth trajectory for the Qatari aviation sector.

The ACI rankings are based on comprehensive data collected from over 2,600 airports across more than 180 countries and territories, providing a reliable and accurate overview of global air traffic patterns.
