The company stressed in a press release that modern games are becoming more and more graphics-intensive. Because of this, developers need the best data compression technologies that can handle files without compromising quality. The RAD team will help Epic Games improve the Unreal Engine by integrating key developments into the engine.

“We know firsthand how impressive RAD’s compression technology is, as we’ve used it to improve load times for our most popular games, including Fortnite. Their team includes the world’s leading experts in-game and video compression tools, and we are delighted to welcome them into our family, ”said Kim Libreri, CTO at Epic Games.

More than 25,000 video games use RAD products. It was they who developed the proprietary Bink and Telemetry file format. Epic Games stressed that despite the acquisition, the company would continue to fulfil its obligations to partners and sell licenses for its products to other developers.
