First tests of mobile GeForce RTX 3060 published: on average up to 22% faster than mobile GeForce RTX 2060

The start of sales of laptops equipped with mobile versions of GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 3070 based on GPU GA104 took place last week. Today the company began selling laptop models equipped with a junior GeForce RTX 3060 graphics accelerator based on the GA106 GPU. In addition, the ban on the publication of reviews of these laptops has expired.

The mobile series of NVIDIA Ampere video cards turned out to be very strange. Despite the fact that it is represented by only three models, they themselves will be available on the market in 28 different configurations: all with different GPU frequencies, power consumption levels, and the declared NVIDIA Max-Q technologies.

The mobile GeForce RTX 3060 is equipped with 3,840 CUDA cores, which is more than the desktop version of this graphics card, which should go on sale later this month. The video clip of the mobile graphics accelerator is paired with 6 GB of GDDR6 video memory that is connected via a 192-bit bus. The officially announced power consumption range of the card can vary from 60 to 115 W, and the GPU frequency – from 1283 to 1703 MHz.

At the moment, there are not many reviews of laptops equipped with this graphics solution on the web. The HardwareUnboxed YouTube channel shared his experience of using laptops with this video card. In their review, two laptops equipped with a GeForce RTX 3060 took part at once. True, in the first case, the declared power consumption level of the card was 115 W, and in the second – 80 W.

The subject of the review was the XMG Apex 17 gaming laptops. One of the models was equipped with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor, the second – an Intel Core i7-10870H. Both received 16 GB of DDR4-3200 MHz RAM. The AMD-based laptop is equipped with a GeForce RTX 3060 with a declared GPU frequency of 1702 MHz. The manufacturer has included support for Dynamic Boost and Resizable Bar technologies but did not add support for modes such as Whisper Mode and Advanced Optimus. Presumably, this particular model is the “oldest” among all mobile GeForce RTX 3060.

The GPU frequency of the laptop based on the Intel processor is 1425 MHz. The declared TGP level is 80 watts. In fact, this is the second slowest version of this mobile video card. Unlike an AMD-based laptop, the Intel-based model does not offer Resizable BAR support but does support Whisper Mode technology. The effective video memory frequency of the GeForce RTX 3060 is 14 GHz in both cases.

HardwareUnboxed gaming tests show that, on average, the mobile GeForce RTX 3060 with 80W TGP is 19% faster than the mobile GeForce RTX 2060 based on Turing with 90W TGP. The version of the mobile GeForce RTX 3060 with a TGP of 115 W, in turn, is faster than the latter by an average of 22%.

Laptops with GeForce RTX 3060 graphics have already appeared in some European retailers. For example, a large British seller Scan UK, the price of the model varies from 999 pounds (about 104 thousand rubles at the current exchange rate) for the ASUS TUF Dash F15 to 2249 pounds (about 235 thousand rubles) for the Razer Blade 7 Pro model.
