Gamereactor: NVIDIA will stop shipping processors for Switch this year. What’s next?

News and rumors about the next version of the Nintendo Switch are rapidly gaining traction following Bloomberg’s announcement of a deal between the Japanese company and Samsung regarding the supply of 7-inch OLED panels. Testing the rumors, a Gamereactor informant discovered that NVIDIA intends to discontinue the SoC production that powers the Nintendo Switch this year.

Both the regular and the smaller and cheaper Switch Lite are equipped with the latest NVIDIA Tegra X1 Mariko. A source told Gamereactor that NVIDIA would phase out the processor in 2021 but could not find out what the Japanese company is planning next or what will happen with the current versions of the gaming system.

The announcement is consistent with rumors circulating on social media and forums that Nintendo will unveil a new Switch model later this year. Former Kotaku employee Imran Khan wrote on ResetEra: “Expect this thing to increase FPS and resolution in the first place, rather than a full Switch 2. Think Pro rather than Super” He also expects imminent leaks, as many developers have allegedly already received test kits for running their games on a more powerful system.

Another fairly reliable source of information about unreleased products, known under the pseudonym NateDrake, added in the same forum thread that the updated version of Switch will still receive some select exclusives, especially from third-party partners. According to him, there may not be so many of them, but he is aware of at least one game that will not launch on Switch’s current generation.

In February, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said during a teleconference that the company had no plans to announce new consoles “any time soon.” Many drew attention to this wording: last year, he said bluntly that the new Nintendo Switch would not hit the market in 2020.
