GeForce RTX 3080 has already been compared with RTX 2080: the increase is really almost two-fold

On the eve of the official announcement of the Ampere family, the specialists of the Eurogamer digital workshop got a copy of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10 GB Founders Edition (+90 MHz base frequency compared to the reference), and they shared some of the results of early testing in a special video.

The accelerator noticeably outperforms its predecessor in conventional graphic rasterization tasks, and in the field of ray tracing, it even promises almost a twofold increase. The test system, in addition to the video card, included an ASUS Maximus Extreme motherboard, an Intel Core i9-10900K @ 5GHz processor, 16 GB of DDR4 @ 3600 MHz RAM.

Initially, the journalists conducted tests in traditional rasterization mode, without activating hardware ray tracing and DLSS smart scaling. All tests were carried out in 4K at maximum quality settings. The video card showed excellent results, so Eurogamer employees, who expected more modest performance, were pleasantly surprised by the growth rate.

The first test concerned Borderlands 3 – in this game, the RTX 2080 Founders Edition accelerator in the highest possible quality produced an average of 34.22 frames / s. The new GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition delivered an average of over 80% performance gain. The new accelerator also proved to be excellent in Shadow of Tomb Raider, giving an average of over 69% growth. In Battlefield V, the graphics card also shone, showing a comparable increase of 69% on average. In Control from Remedy, the increase was also considerable – 77% on average. The accelerator showed itself best of all in Doom Ethernal, showing more than 80% increase (and in some difficult scenes, the new video card produced 100% more frames / s).

The second part of the tests concerning games in ray tracing mode, where NVIDIA promises a gain of up to two times. It is worth noting here that the use of the smart zoom mode and other factors could blur the result somewhat from the double power increase in the ray-tracing area. But the results are still good.

In Control at 4K in high-quality XDR mode with DLSS in performance mode, the RTX 3080 averaged 76% superiority over the RTX 2080. In Quake RTX, where conventional rasterizing calculations have minimal impact on the result, at maximum 4K settings and in path tracing mode, the average gain was almost double – 92%.

RTX 3080 owners will be able to run even more games in 4K at 60fps, even without tweaks like DLSS (after all, this technology is not supported everywhere). In general, the performance gain between generations of video cards is one of the highest in recent years. Of course, there are not enough tests so far, but they are already very encouraging – wait for a detailed acquaintance of our specialists with the new maps.
