Yesterday we saw a comparison of the desktop GeForce RTX 4090 with mobile , and today we will see how different the mobile RTX 4090 Laptop and RTX 4080 Laptop are.

For analysis, the authors of the ComputerBase resource took MSI Titan GT77HX V13 and XMG Neo 16 E23 laptops. The first is equipped with an RTX 4090 and Core i9-13950HX, the second offers an RTX 4080 and Core i7-13700HX.

As you can see, in the case of maximum power limits of 150W, the cards are very close. The difference is only about 10%. And for any other power values, if they are the same for two adapters, the performance will differ slightly, which is a reason to think about the advisability of overpaying.

You can also see that the RTX 4090 Laptop at 120W will be slower than the RTX 4080 Laptop at 150W. At the same time, the minimum figure for the RTX 4090 Laptop is 80 watts. At this setting, the card is almost 30% slower than its maximum and slower than the RTX 4080 Laptop rated at 100W or higher. And the RTX 4080 Laptop, with its minimum of 60 W, is generally almost half as weak as the top-end RTX 4090 Laptop. As before, when choosing a gaming laptop, the TGP value for graphics cards is probably the most important value.

The authors also provided an overall performance rating for Nvidia mobile new products and many other desktop adapters. As you can see, the RTX 4090 Laptop at the maximum power limit roughly matches the desktop RTX 3090 and Radeon RX 6900 XTXH, lagging behind the RTX 4070 Ti by only 5%. That is, the mobile RTX 4090 Laptop at its maximum is approximately the desktop RTX 4070 Ti, when compared within the new generation. The desktop RTX 4080, despite having identical parameters, is 24% faster than the mobile RTX 4090 Laptop.

The mobile RTX 4080 Laptop at its maximum is an analogue of the desktop RTX 3080. The desktop RTX 4070 Ti, which is very similar in characteristics, is 17% faster. By analogy, we can assume that the desktop RTX 4070 will roughly correspond to the mobile RTX 4080 Laptop, that is, the desktop RTX 3080.

If you evaluate the RTX 4080 Laptop with a minimum power limit, then this is just the level of the desktop RTX 3060 Ti.

Recall that the RTX 4090 Laptop is based on the AD103 GPU with 9728 CUDA cores and is equipped with 16 GB of memory with a 256-bit bus. The main parameters here are identical to the desktop RTX 4080. As for the mobile RTX 4080 Laptop, it is based on the AD104 GPU with 7424 CUDA cores, and the card also has 12 GB of memory with a 192-bit bus. In this case, the parameters are almost identical to the desktop RTX 4070 Ti.

rtx 4080 laptop vs desktop

The RTX 4080 laptop and desktop GPUs are both very powerful, but there are some key differences between them.

Performance

The RTX 4080 laptop is about 10-15% slower than the desktop version in terms of raw performance. This is because the laptop version has to be power-efficient in order to fit into a smaller form factor. However, the laptop version is still very powerful and can handle even the most demanding games and applications.

Portability

The RTX 4080 laptop is obviously much more portable than the desktop version. This makes it a good choice for gamers and creators who need to be able to take their rig with them on the go.

Price

The RTX 4080 laptop is also more expensive than the desktop version. This is because the laptop version has to use more expensive components in order to meet its power and thermal requirements.

Overall

The RTX 4080 laptop is a good choice for gamers and creators who need a powerful and portable rig. However, it is also more expensive and slower than the desktop version.

Here is a table summarizing the key differences between the RTX 4080 laptop and desktop GPUs:

Feature RTX 4080 Laptop RTX 4080 Desktop
Performance 10-15% slower Up to 20% faster
Portability More portable Less portable
Price More expensive Less expensive

Ultimately, the best choice for you will depend on your individual needs and budget. If you need the most powerful gaming or creative rig possible, then the desktop version is the way to go. However, if you need a portable rig that you can take with you on the go, then the laptop version is a good option.

RTX 4090 laptop vs 4080 desktop

The RTX 4090 laptop and the RTX 4080 desktop are both powerful GPUs, but they have different strengths and weaknesses.

The RTX 4090 laptop is the more powerful of the two, with around 68% more CUDA cores and 50% more VRAM. This means that it will be able to deliver better performance in demanding games and applications. However, the RTX 4090 laptop also consumes more power, which can lead to shorter battery life and higher temperatures.

The RTX 4080 desktop is less powerful than the RTX 4090 laptop, but it is also more efficient. This means that it will be able to deliver good performance while consuming less power. The RTX 4080 desktop is also more upgradeable, as you can easily swap out the CPU, RAM, and storage without having to replace the entire system.

Ultimately, the best choice for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you are looking for the absolute best performance in a laptop, then the RTX 4090 laptop is the way to go. However, if you are looking for a more balanced and efficient system, then the RTX 4080 desktop is a better option.

Here is a table comparing the two GPUs:

Feature RTX 4090 Laptop RTX 4080 Desktop
CUDA cores 16,384 10,240
Memory 24 GB GDDR6X 12 GB GDDR6
Power consumption 250 W 300 W
Price $3,500 $2,500

The RTX 4090 laptop and RTX 4080 desktop are both powerful graphics cards from Nvidia, but they have some key differences. The laptop version has a lower TGP (Total Graphics Power), which means it can’t be clocked as high or draw as much power as the desktop version. This results in slightly lower performance for the laptop version.

Here is a table comparing the two cards:

Feature RTX 4090 Laptop RTX 4080 Desktop
Architecture Ada Lovelace Ada Lovelace
SMs 18432 10240
Memory 24GB GDDR6 24GB GDDR6
Boost clock speed 2.5 GHz 2.8 GHz
TDP 175W 375W
Launch date Q1 2023 Q4 2022
Price $3000-3999 $999-1199

As you can see, the RTX 4080 desktop has a number of advantages over the RTX 4090 laptop, including:

  • Higher clock speed: This can lead to higher frame rates in games and other applications.
  • More SMs: This means more processing power for demanding tasks.
  • Higher TDP: This allows the card to be clocked higher and draw more power, which can lead to better performance.

However, the RTX 4090 laptop also has some advantages, including:

  • More portable: This is important if you need a gaming laptop that you can take with you on the go.
  • Lower price: The RTX 4090 laptop is significantly cheaper than the RTX 4080 desktop.

Ultimately, the best card for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. If you need the best possible performance for gaming or other demanding tasks, then the RTX 4080 desktop is the better choice. However, if you need a portable gaming laptop with a lower price tag, then the RTX 4090 laptop is a great option.
